Elba
>> Rio
nell'Elba |
Rio
nell'Elbas' history is signed by continuous attacks, destruction
and stubborn, tenacious reconstruction-work by its inhabitants.
It is a small village that raises 170 meters above sea-level
and that still preserves a medieval aspect with its narrow alleys,
tiny squares and flowery balconies. It was erected in the 11:th
century and fortified by the Pisans in the 12:th and then razed
to the ground by the pirate Barbarossa in 1534 and subsequently
fortified by the Appianies. It is the mining heart of Elba and
the center of mining activities. Many shops still sell minerals
to collectors. |
|
The Mining Museum, inevitable while at Rio nell'Elba, is made
up of about 700 samples from the Alfredo Ricci collection, mostly
deriving from Mount Capanne and from the eastern slope of the
island. At the end of the village you find the only public wash-house
on Elba, excavated in the stones on the inside of a moderate
building, illuminated by big windows. The fortress del Volteraio,
that towers on the homonymous peak, the Sanctuary dedicated
to Santa Caterina di Alessandria, the del Giogo Fortress from
where you can enjoy a superb view and Rovine di Grassera, are
all worth a visit and are located in the immediate vicinity
of Rio nell'Elba. |
